LANES NOW OPEN IN BOTH DIRECTIONS ON HWY 36 PROJECT

Both lanes north and south bound are open now on the Highway 36 loop on the North side of Brenham.  Mark Shafer with the Brenham TxDOT office said they didn’t have any complaints from motorists Wednesday when the lanes were opened.  He said that both lanes are now open northbound at the Highway 290 cloverleaf the way they were before the project began.  Shafer says that crews will next be installing the permanent signals at the intersection with FM 577.  They will also be installing a section of median barrier and some additional paving will be done on the south end of the project and on the access road that leads to Premier Metal Buyers.  Shafer says the project should be completed by the end of June.  The $14.7 million project began in February of 2016.

  1. The whole design is bad, why not build an overpass at 36 business, spent 36 mil plus to by pass light @ 577 to alleviate back ups, and have since added 3 lights down the road. Typical government!

    1. The signage is misleading as motorists travel 36 North the sign announcing Business 36 South only says 36 South as if there is a turnaround at the exit to go back south. The exit sign is correct but the announcement sign is not. This should be corrected. There should also be a warning that the right lane approaching Business 36/North Park is a right turn only. Most of the big semi trucks are in that lane and must move over with very little time to do so.

  2. Be careful out there folks! Going North, the highway is 2 lanes then drops to one lane at the light at Park Street. Not only that, they closed the cross over for Dixie Road, so now you have to do a U turn at the light at 577 or just not go home that way. Once the road is finished in the new subdivision, you will be able to drive thru there to get to Dixie Road. Amazing that they closed Dixie Road access but put one for the new neighborhood. Why not have them come out onto Dixie Road to access 36 instead of making it harder on the people that have been driving that way for years? Not very well thought out at all!!!

  3. I drive this route every day. I have concern about some of the design aspects of the project. Heading northbound, customers to Premier no longer have access to their driveway. Traffic (including 18 wheelers) will now have to make a U-turn at 577 to get there. The larger trucks will probably have a difficult time making that corner.
As you approach N. Park/Business 36, the right lane becomes a right turn only lane just past the new bridge. This causes a bottleneck with through traffic now forced into the left lane. Again, people will wait until the last second to try and merge to the left. I think a better solution would have been allow both lanes to go straight and create a smaller right turn lane off to the side.

    1. Exactly. Squeezing two lanes of high speed traffic to one lane is a stupid idea. I don’t know who designs these projects but they need to get someone who knows what they’re doing.

  4. good that it is finished……but WHEN is the work on 105 over the Brazos going to restart?
