LATE THREES LIFT BUCS TO WIN

Morris Dunnigan and Vicktor Arnick hit big 3-pointers late

PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Two big 3-pointers helped Blinn College men’s basketball break open a tie game and pull away for a 83-72 victory over Lamar State College-Port Arthur Jan. 31 in Port Arthur.

With the score tied 71-71 with 2:30 left in the game, Morris Dunnigan drilled a 3-pointer and then Vicktor Arnick backed that up with a 3-pointer of his own to grab the lead and the momentum that helped the Buccaneers notch a big road win. Blinn was able to outscore Port Arthur 12-1 in the final 2:30 of the game. The victory improves the Blinn record to 7-5 in conference and 16-6 overall.

“Lamar State-Port Arthur has a very good program,” said Blinn head coach Scott Schumacher. “For us to be able to go on the road and get a win and show the mental toughness on the road is good for our players.”

Ja’Cardo Hawkins had a big night with 28 points on a 13-for-19 shooting night while grabbing 11 rebounds. Arnick added 17 points while Lionheart Leslie scored 13 and Jalan McCloud chipped in with 12 points.

Port Arthur held the momentum early on and even held a 41-38 lead at the half. Blinn was able to outscore Port Arthur 45-31 in the second half.

The game was fairly even coming down the stretch until Dunnigan and Arnick hit back to back 3-pointers and Port Arthur received two technical fouls and the Buccaneers made 3-of-4 from the line to put the game out of reach.

Blinn will be back home when it hosts Coastal Bend College Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
