LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS CONCERNED ABOUT POTENTIAL NEW OPEN CARRY LAW

A handgun bill approved by the Senate that will allow open carry of handguns was sent to the House for approval.

There is resistance to the bill by law enforcement, but the Senate approved the measure handily with a 20 to 10 vote in favor, and some second amendment advocates also do not like the idea, voicing concern on whether the person with the firearm is a threat or not.

It is already legal to carry a concealed handgun, but one out of six that still ban a person from carrying a fire arm openly.

The senate is expected to vote today on a bill allowing concealed handguns in college classrooms.

Brenham Police Chief Rex Phelps feels says that he is not quite ready to give an official opinion, but expresses some of his concerns about the proposed bill.

Governor Greg Abbott says he will sign the bill if it gets to his desk.

  1. It doesn’t really matter who likes, or dislikes this new law. It is what it is. Live with it. The voters have spoken!

  2. First of all this article, like many currently running on this subject, conveniently leaves out the word “licensed”. The law would allow licensed open carry for people who already have their concealed handgun license and for those who get it in the future. This is NOT a bill that will allow anyone to openly carry a holstered handgun. The DPS background check for these licenses is VERY strict, which is why license holders are very rarely involved in a crime related to the use of a firearm.

Secondly, the third paragraph appears to make no sense. It refers to open carrying of firearms, which is a generalized statement that can’t be made when referring to guns rights in Texas. The open carrying of long guns is already legal, this bill deals directly with handguns.
