LAWSUIT FILED OVER LAW SCHOOL NAME CHANGE

A Houston law school's name change has prompted a lawsuit alleging trademark infringement.

The University of Houston System has filed a federal lawsuit against the Houston College of Law, which last week announced it was changing its name from the South Texas College of Law.

The university system's law school is called the University of Houston Law Center.

The lawsuit alleges the name change and the Houston College of Law's adoption of the university system's red and white color scheme constitutes "intentional and willful infringement of UH's intellectual property and unfair competition," which results in "confusion in the marketplace and damage" to the university and its brand.

Claire Caton, a Houston College of Law spokeswoman, says the school - established in 1923 - does not comment on pending litigation.
