LESTER NEARLY PERFECT IN CUBS 4-0 WIN
Dylan Lester came as close as you can to a perfect game without getting one Tuesday night at Leroy Dreyer Field, as the Brenham Cubs defeated the Waller Bulldogs, 4-0.
The win clinched the outright District 19/5A title--the 45th district title in the school's history. It is also the 32nd-straight season the Cubs have advanced to the playoffs.
Bulldogs’ shortstop Corbin Vines tapped a slow rolling infield single to lead off the ballgame. Lester (7-1) then dominated the game, retiring the next 18 Waller batters in a row, striking out eight.
Cameron Draehn got the Cubs (18-6/11-2) on the board with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt that scored Jacob Stegent.
Ryan Newman extended the Cubs’ lead to 2-0 with a ground ball out that plated Zach Barnes in the bottom of the third inning.
Brenham added two insurance runs in the fifth inning when Sam McElreath singled home Barnes and Jaquay Cross.
McElreath finished with three hits and two runs batted in. Barnes also had three hits and scored twice, while Stegent was two-for-three with a run and a stolen base.
The Cubs will close out their regular season Friday night when they travel to Houston to face Spring Woods. Game time is 7:00—the pre-game begins at 6:40 on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
