LOCAL BOYS & GIRLS CLUB CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY

A group of staff and supporters celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County’s move into its current facility next to the Bluebell Aquatic Center.

The Club was established 19 years ago as an extension of the Brazos Valley club.  Then in 2003 Washington County got its own charter and moved into the current facility in 2004.

Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Melissa McCune says just doesn’t seem it’s been around this long…

McCune says it took the “special vision” of a group of citizens nearly 20 years ago to make the Boys and Girls Club into a reality.

Among others, McCuns cited Steve Davis, John Sims, Tom S. Whitehead Jr., and Brian Miller along with the vision of fifty people who attended early meetings to get the Club off the Ground.  She added that it took the support of the entire community to launch the program.

McCune says the Boys & Girls Club provides a safe, fun place for local youth to be on a regular basis…

McCune also says it takes a lot of people to insure the continued success of the program, including the current Board of Directors and the club’s staff, including: Director of Operations, Phelicia Marshall; Program Coordinator, Rachel Mladenka; and Coordinator of Administration and Development, Menta Dahmann.

McCune also spoke glowingly of the 18-20 part-time Youth Development Specialists who she says are the real backbone of the operation.
