LOCAL POLICE WARN AGAINST “SKIMMING”

Brenham police are urging the community to keep a close eye on bank and credit card accounts after credit card skimmers have been found in the surrounding counties.

According to authorities, credit card skimming is when a thief uses a small device to steal credit card information in an otherwise legitimate credit or debit card transaction.

When a credit or debit card is run through a skimmer, the device captures and stores all the details stored in the card's magnetic strip.

According to Brenham Police Captain Dant Lange (Lang), skimmers have been found in Burleson County and the surrounding area.

Lange says local authorities have had issues with skimmers here before , and want to caution residents to pay careful attention to their accounts.

“ATM machines and gas stations are the most obvious places where skimmers can be found,” according to Lange, who urges everyone to pay close attention to the machine or gas pump.

Lange says if something doesn’t look right, choose a different pump. He adds that if you see something wrong with an ATM, don’t use the machine and let your bank know.

Lange added that the business owner should contact the police as well.
