LOCAL SALES TAX REBATES DOWN ACROSS THE BOARD

Local sales tax rebates for June took a dip in Brenham, Burton and Washington County.

The allocations are based on sales taxes collected in April.

Brenham’s rebate for June was $482,372, down 9 percent from last June’s payment of $530,122.  So far, the total rebates in 2016 total $3,065,222, down 2.5 percent from last year.

Washington County’s rebate this month was $188,208, down 12.5 percent from last year’s $215,104.  The county has received $1,246,722 in 2016, a 3 percent decline from last year.

Burton’s June rebate was $2,321, down 37 percent from a year ago, when they received $3,688.  For 2016, Burton has received $18,903, up 11 percent from the same period in 2015.

State Comptroller Glenn Hegar sent June sales tax rebates to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts this month, totaling $618 million, a 1.8 percent decline from June 2015.

Statewide, cities received $404.4 million, down 1.2 percent. Rebates to counties totaled $36.2 million, a 7.9 percent decline.

Hegar said the petroleum industry slump continues to affect sales tax revenues.
