MALE INMATES RETURN TO AUSTIN CO. JAIL

Male inmates are back in the Austin County Jail in Bellville.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has given the okay for male prisoners to return to the jail, after the jail was shut down in August due to excessive mold.

At the time, all prisoners—male and female—were transferred to Ft. Bend County.

Last month, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards conducted an inspection, and reported that the areas in question have undergone mold remediation and, “have thoroughly addressed the problem areas.”

The cost to house the Austin County prisoners in Ft. Bend County has totaled about $355,000 dollars.

According to County Judge Tim Lapham, female inmates will continue to be housed at Ft. Bend, until a plan is determined for their return to the local facility.
