MARY BARNES-TILLEY ANNOUNCES SHE WON’T SEEK RE-ELECTION

Mary Barnes-Tilley has announced she will not seek re-election to the Brenham City Council.

“It has been an honor serving the citizens of our community as a member of the Brenham City Council for the past five years but I have decided not to seek re-election” said Barnes-Tilley. “I have enjoyed getting to know the citizens, hearing their concerns and giving them a voice in their local government.”

Barnes-Tilley currently holds the Position Five-At Large Seat on the council.

"It has been my pleasure to work with Mayor Tate, my fellow council members, City Manager Terry Roberts, as well as all the city staff, and most importantly, the citizens of this great city" said Barnes-Tilley. "While we shared differing opinions and viewpoints at times, it was always a healthy discussion and debate, and ultimately we made decisions for the good of the citizens of Brenham. It is my hope that new members of the council also embrace the servant leadership philosophy and make decisions best for Brenham."

As the February 17th deadline for filing applications nears, there are still no contested races for the Brenham City Council.

Four positions on the Brenham City Council are up for election this year- Ward One and Three, as well as At-Large Positions Five and Six.

Former council member Charlie Pyle has filed for the Position Five-At Large seat.

Ward-One Brenham City Councilman Keith Herring is running for re-election. Andrew Ebel, the Ward Three incumbent, has also filed for re-election

Longtime Brenham resident Susan Cantey has filed for Position Six-At Large seat. The position is currently held by Gloria Nix, who has said she will not file for re-election.

Meanwhile, there are no contested races for the Brenham School Board.

The seats up for election include: Position Five- currently held by Tommie Sullivan, Position Six- held by Natalie Lange, and Position Seven- held by Melvin Ehlert. All three incumbents have filed for re-election to the school board.

  1. Thanks for all you have done, Mary. I don’t always agree with your politics, but I appreciate the time you put into the job. And we all know that you are fair and honest. It is rare that anyone competent and selfless is willing to do a job like this for no pay and little recognition. Bless you and your family that you have done it for Brenham.

  2. Former Council Member Pyle is running for this seat. As I recall, last time he quit before his term was up. With that being said. I hope someone else stands up to run for this position. I believe anyone could win this position and the Citizens and Taxpayers deserve better than reelecting a Quitter. I would run and I know I would win; but I’m still in school. Even at my young age; I know we deserve better. Please, if you are considering running, please step up.

  3. The people of Brenham thank you for your service, Mary Barnes-Tilley! You served with the same commitment and passion you do everything. I hope you go on to bigger and better offices because Brenham, Washington County, and Texas need you!

  4. While I don’t always agree with what my representatives do, I admire their service. I personally know those that have been maligned and I know they are honorable people doing what they believe to be the right thing. When they act, their names and decisions are front and center. While I fully support anyone’s right to disagree, I believe only a coward does so anonymously. If you truely believe in what you post, have the courage to do so publically!

  5. Weary Tax Payer

As of know her replacement has already stepped down in 2011 and the city had to have a called election for his replacement which was Mrs. Tilley and also costing the city tax payers quite a bit of money for a called election!! So I would think it will not get any better!!!

  6. Wise lady, distance yourself from the ” wall street banker” mentalities on council and city manager. Hoping your replacement has a spine and leads the replacement for terminating city manager. We taxpayers can only hope and pray.

    1. Well said. It’ll be a day to celebrate when all the City Council members,Roberts and Tate are replaced and we can begin to head in the right direction to start to represent the citizens of Brenham instead of just themselves.
