NEW PLAYSCAPE GOING IN AT HENDERSON PARK

A Playscape is being installed at Henderson Park this week.  The new playground equipment is going in near the kitchen and pavilion area.  Construction is estimated to be completed by the end of this week, weather permitting.

The Brenham Community Development Corporation (BCDC) approved $294,500 for improvements to Henderson Park this year. The playground is just one of those improvements.  Other improvements planned for the park are a covered Barbeque Area, Additional Sidewalks and Lighting, Ball Field Renovations, and Grandstand Modifications.  Photos courtesy of the City of Brenham.

  1. All this fuss over some playground equipment and park upgrades. I think the city did what it had to do. Whats gonna happen when all these new stores everybody wants finally come to brenham? Do you think local companies will get the bid? Most likely not. So are you gonna complain and not shop there , or will you just go along like all of the other people and buy their goods?? If you dont like the way the system is run , run for office and change it. Me ,I like it just like it is.

  2. Another perspective, it is presumptive if the city went out for bid, however they did not. There is a local contractor that installs commercial, certified play systems. In fact, we installed one at holt park behind the restrooms. We gave the city a much bigger play system while staying in their budget. This project is over $60,000. As a business owner I send several thousand dollars a month to the Texas Comptroller Office for collected sales tax, All I want to do is have the opportunity to play.

    1. Jim, I agree with you on all points but I guess your not in the “where are you from home firm” or “good ole boy system”! If you maybe painted your face up and pretended you were an outsider then I’d almost bet you would prosper more with upcoming local jobs or change your business name with a P.O. Box #. Just some suggestions that might help you get more work. Or wait maybe higher a consultant firm to help!!!

    2. From what I’ve seen of both playgrounds, the Henderson one is a bit larger as far as jungle gym. Including the fitness area, Hohlt wins.

I’ve been to both parks and seen them for myself. This is my opinion and I’m not interested in any more semantics.

However, if you want to play – the only thing I can suggest is complain to the city every time this happens and “Fire” council members voting in new blood that will do better.

It’s already been shown with the county commissioners – Brieden and Hueske out, and you can bet the $65 difference in bids on a vehicle had a bit to do with it.

      1. Know the facts and have some respect. If you don’t know the facts go speak to someone who was involved with the project instead of disrespecting through the media. The City of Brenham hires a lot of local services such as annual janitorial services, annual landscaping services, annual concrete contractor, plumbing, etc. They are hired because of the price they submit and the professionalism in which they offer to the City of Brenham. As far as the playscape purchase goes, the City purchased this system through the Texas Buyboard which is a competitive purchasing cooperative in which numerous contractors and companies competitively bid on these structures and services which meet the purchasing laws by the state for municipalities and are considered acceptable in the place of a bid. Don’t blame city council members and believe me the City of Brenham has the most restrictive purchasing policies that are required to be followed to ensure that tax dollars are spent wisely. Enjoy the playground Brenham!

  3. Nice play system. Great work city of Brenham. I’m sure the out of town contractor appreciates the work. After all, they spend all their money in Brenham. The reason I’m saying this, is this did not go out for bid. Bad idea for the city to allow purchases of items through a special prevision in the city puchasing. A local company can and will save thousands of dollars for city residents. After all look at the concrete/restrooms at Firemans park and the man hours it’s going to take to fix. Shop Brenham and keep it local.

    1. What business here does playgrounds however? Sometimes we can’t do “in town” work on these issues – there are codes that have to be followed for example.

It’s also presumptive to assume that a local business would automatically put in the lowest bid. Clearly that hasn’t happened often enough, which is why the area contractors being selected.

In my honest opinion however, the restroom was a bad mistake from the start. They were clean and serviceable – a little drafty but nothing that a bit of wadding couldn’t fix. If they had to replace them to begin with it had to be something that was not up to federal regulations.

  4. Park playgrounds are great for grandparents with grandchildren as well as many others. It would be nice if the city would also keep up the current parks. The play areas at Fireman’s Park and just south of Greenwade Field needs to have new mulch put down. The old mulch had turned to dirt.
