DONALD RAY AHRENS AND NITA HYATT SELECTED AS MAN AND WOMAN OF THE YEAR.

  

The Washington County Chamber of Commerce and the Brenham Economic Foundation selected Nita Hyatt and Donald Ray Ahrens has the 2014 Man and Woman of the Year at their annual banquet held at the Fireman's Training Center Tuesday evening.

Last year’s Man and Woman of the Year Lanella Gray and Bill Rankin announced the winners.

Nita Hyatt is an active member of the First United Methodist Church, a mother who was active in her children’s activities as well as being a high school mentor, a HOST mentor, a tutor with the SMART Program at Faith Mission, and mentored and supported two underprivileged high school boys that later went on to become successful adults and parents. She is currently on the Board of Directors for Faith Mission and, since 1994, has been involved in assisting or completely writing the scripts for both Junior and Senior Maifest Performances.

Hyatt had this to say about her win after the banquet:

Donald Ray Ahrens is a native of Washington County, graduating from Brenham High School, served in the military, and avid sports fan, and has been involved with the Washington County Fair for over six decades. He has also recognized as a leader on the state level, serving on the board of directors for several state organizations.

He also has been an elected official in Washington County, served on the Chamber Board of Directors, and a charter member of Goodfellows.

Ahrens is a member of St. Pauls’s Evangelical Church, where he served as councilman and chairman of the congregation.

He is also a Live Auction auctioneer, helping to raise millions of dollars for local non-profit organizations.

Ahrens has been married for 54 years, and they have two children and three grandchildren.

Ahrens had this to say about his thoughts of winning the award:

The Keynote speaker of the evening was Joel Allison, CEO of Baylor Scott and White Healthcare.  Allison spoke to the audience concerning the state of healthcare, and the changes coming to healthcare in the future.

  1. Congratulations to Nita Hyatt! Our kids grew up together. Upon moving to Brenham in the mid 80’s she was one of the first people met, and remains today one of the nicest and most helpful citizens of Brenham and Washington County! Great family!!
