NUMBER OF FOSTER CHILDREN SLEEPING IN STATE OFFICES CLIMBS

The number of children sleeping in state offices has continued to climb even as state officials have made changes to find more foster homes.

According to the Austin American Statesman, more than 300 children have slept in state offices and other temporary living situations because of a lack of foster homes this fiscal year.

Data released today Friday shows the sharpest increase in the fiscal year that started September 1st was in March, when 65 foster children had no placements for at least two consecutive nights.

These children had to sleep in state offices, hotels, and shelters.

Patrick Crimmins, spokesman for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, says the numbers are disappointing. Gov. Greg Abbott previously made it clear that it is unaccepted for foster children to live in CPS offices.
