ORIGINAL BRENHAM SONIC CLOSING

A long-time staple of Brenham eating is closing its doors and its car ports.

The original Brenham Sonic on South Market Street is going out of business this Friday—forty years to the day since it first opened.

According to Sonic’s current owner, Justin Tomachefsky, he had planned to close the Market Street location since construction of the new Sonic location on South Day Street.  However, during construction of the new site it was decided to keep the old location open as long as possible.

Tomachevsky says both locations have been very successful over the past seven years, but the old location is in need of costly renovations.  He says that with the two Sonic’s so close, it makes sense to shut down the Market Street drive-in.

At 2:00 Friday, the original owners, Keith and Elizabeth Twiggs, will gather at the Market St. Sonic along with their very first customer from 40 years ago, Tiemann “Skipper” Dippel, Jr.

Tomachevsky says at this time there are no plans for the Market Street property.

  1. i understand that a lot of people on here are bashing the sonic on st day and don’t realize that most of the employees that y’all love to see on market or going to be at the new sonic. i also realize that in the past there have been rude employees there but there has been a lot of change at the new store so instead of bashing it y’all should come check it out and let them know what they can do to make your experience better. so come by and see it cause nellie will be there to say good morning to you

  2. I can not believe this I remember walking here as a kid it was the safest walk it had the nicest staff I am done with sonic I will miss all of your faces

  3. I can remember like yesterday, before our Friday Football game, we always went to SONIC for our pre-game feast !! We would fly down Mansfield Street to get to SONIC first !! Always had a : Super Sonic Burger w/Cheese, Onion Rings and a Coke. Hate to see it close. Don’t like the new location. Tough getting in and out of the new location. Gonna go by Friday, and, have one last Sonic Burger. Sure wish they could keep it open. Thanks for the memories !!

  4. New S day location employees and owner should read these comments. So far 9 of 22 have basically said thier service and food is bad! Wow

  5. PLEASE PLEASE SEND ALL OF THIS COMMENTS TO CORPORATE I BET IF WE SIGN A LETTER MAYBE IT WILL HELP…..NOBODY WANTS THEM TO CLOSE……HELP

  6. I live on S Day and do not like going to the location there. The traffic & the hill make it dicy. The employees are much friendlier on Market St and the food is better too. I will definitely miss going to Sonic in the mornings. Although I am happy that Nellie is going to the S Day location. She will be my only reason for doing business there if at all. Please reconsider the S Market location again!!!!! It is so much better in so many ways.

  7. it is extremely unfortunate that such a staple has to close down. it’s always a shame when a business has to make a hard decision. however, be thankful! Sonic’s famous ice, sweet tea, coneys, tots with cheese, and cherry limeades are still available in Brenham, even if not in the most convenient location to many.

as well, the wonderful service that Nellie, Florice and so many other faithful veteran Sonic employees provided for the past 40 years will have the opportunity to move to the new store. Imagine how they feel!?? 40 years working in the same place – they know that store like the back of their hands – but thankfully several of those faithful servants will have a chance to continue serving Brenham with a smile unlike any other.

my grandparents started this location – their first – and it’s sad to see it go. But life does go on. i encourage all to try to understand that business is not always as cut and dry as it seems on the outside – i know a lot of thought and anguish has gone into this decision and Sonic as a whole shouldn’t suffer in Brenham because of one location closing. go visit the new store and make a new tradition.

(speaking of change, i still can’t deny i miss the red tray sitting on my car window as i was invited to sit and eat in my car just like was the original plan. and those mint-speared burgers. as my first job, i still remember how to set up the tray with all the food so nicely presented. and when i was a kid i’d get a monkey hanging off my cherry limeade. that was fun. 🙂 things change… that’s for sure.)

  8. So sad to see the Market St Sonic closing.
By far the best service ever. Thank you Sonic employees
for your wonderful service to us. You will be missed.
    Huggs

  9. Seriously!! This is awful news!!! My husband will not go to the new sonic – bad location, bad customer service, etc. Please reconsider & keep the REAL Sonic open!!

  10. Please reconsider. The Sonic on Market Street is so much more accessible and the folks are friendlier. So many years of memories there. I agree with Holly and the other comments. Nellie starts my day off on a positive note Monday through Friday. Please reconsider this horrendous decision.

  11. I really hate to see that this location will be closing. I can’t say that there is another place that I stop at on a daily basis not even the grocery store. This has been my jump start place each day with good friendly service and my Large Sonic Sweet Tea in the morning. Now thou I pass the other location everyday I will not stop there. One the service is slow and unfriendly and second it is very hard to get in and out of no matter the time of day.

It is also sad to see that with a new school coming into the “market street” area that this location will be closing. So much more business is sure to be headed their way.

This location has not only been a part of my past but it became a part of my child and his friends that would car pool with us.. The loved riding with us because we always did the after school sonic drive. .
gonna miss the ole’ place. . and my morning sweet tea !!

  12. Gonna miss Sonic on Market. I guess I won’t go to Sonic anymore. Well, there’s always Dairy Queen. I just don’t understand why so many businesses leave the Market St area. It’s right in the middle of town and easily accessible from most anywhere.

  13. Lots of memories at that location. Going through that Sonic on saturday night was a requisite part of a teenagers routine before going to a Texas Pride or Drifters dance at Silver Wings. I may still have a few plastic hamburger swords packed away from those days. 🙂

Things change and time moves on, but grateful for the good food and 30+ years of memories. Im gonna run by today and get a Coney and tots one last time.

  14. Wow, just heard about this. I’d guess that I’ve been to the “old” Sonic about a thousand times over the last 40 years, and I don’t think that I’ve ever been to the “new” Sonic at all. What a shame.

  15. This does nothing but make me sad. I live a block and a half from that Sonic. I remember as a child first moving to Brenham in 1973, my grandparents and I would walk down the street to get grape slushes. An nowadays it was great for a quick, CLOSE place to get dinner. Sigh…I wish they’d reconsider.

  16. I hate to see it close. I too prefer the Sonic on Market Street. No crazy traffic to dodge and the service is a lot better at the old land mark.
I remember many a Friday and Saturday night cruising the parking lot on our many trips around the strip!

  17. Market Street Sonic is really a Brenham landmark.. Who doesn’t remember going there at lunch while in high school or as a teenager cruising through the parking lot on Friday or Saturday night. Sad to see it close, But with the economy being what it is and the amount of money it would take to remodel, I do understand why they decided to close it down. Still it is sad to see it close. Thank you Mr Twiggs for bringing Sonic to Brenham.

  18. What a tragedy. Brenhamnites will have to dtive a little farther to get theor heart attack on a bun…with chile and onions

  19. Such a sad thing to see go. I visit the Market Street location nearly 7 days a week and often times twice in a day. It’s a wonderful treat to see Nellie in the mornings with her infectious smile…she can absolutely turn a frown upside down – the young people at the “new” Sonic do not come close to Nellie’s courtesy & great customer service! The South Day Sonic is not easily accessible, especially in the early morning hours of school/work traffic. Since it’s not going to be on my way to work anymore, I guess I will be saving lots of money….too bad the Tomachefsky’s don’t see the gem that they have & spend some money to make more money!

    1. It is my understanding that Sonic corporate would not give the owner a new franchise for the Market Street location due to its proximity to the South Day Street Sonic. If it was successful, that decision doesn’t make a lot of sense. But sometimes big corporations don’t make logical decisions. I believe the Market Street Sonic had an invaluable advantage of being close to Brenham schools.

      1. Maybe an alternate location closer to the loop105 intersection
would satisfy the Sonic Corp AND be more handy for many of us?

  20. Very disappointing to hear this. This was the only one that I would go to, they were very personal and the services was hands down 100% better than the other location. I guess no more Sonic for me. 🙁

    1. I agree 100%…..the food is soooooo much better than the new one….just keep it OPEN ON MARKET!!!!

  21. Went by there this morning at 9 and parking lot was almost half full. Redo the parking lot and have a regrand opening! Some of us prefer not to get near the intersection of 290 and 36!
