  1. I have to agree with county resident too many kids getting absolutely free education this is not fair. I am retired with a couple of rent houses and I pay around $12,000 a year in taxes no children in school. I say let’s do a 20% sales tax that way everyone is involved and do away with property taxes

  2. I’m on a fixed income and it isn’t fair I’m 73 and my husband is 72 we get ssi and are not well

  3. Wake up and smell the stink folks. Please think about it. From the county and state view, they figure to ask for the moon with over the top increases knowing full well the gullible taxpayers can be satisfied with a 30% decrease of the proposed increase. The county AND state then get exactly what they wanted. Every time the state fails to increase education funding OR cuts funding YOU pay the difference in property taxes. Ask a school board member, they will tell you the truth. Every property tax increase begins with your state legislators.

  4. What about all the new subdivisions being proposed and being built adding millions and millions of dollars of value to the tax roles. Our elected officials seem to spend it faster than they can collect it. Our town was a lot better off before all the growth and outside influence. I miss the good old days of the 50s and 60s in Brenham

  5. Let see for my county taxes I get law enforcement .. emergency medical services.. county road maintenance.. Wonder wht r we getting for our school taxes

  6. The question is wht r we getting for our school taxes..my county taxes r only 698.46 verses school taxes at 1993.85

    1. I am in my 40’s, and when I was in school, there were no issues of teachers not having supplies; there always seemed to be enough. What has happened in the last 40 years that has changed this? Could it be the influx of illegal aliens sending their children to school but not paying taxes as you and I do? When we are paying for free lunches for residents that pay no taxes and we pay for interpreters for the children that do not speak English, our costs will go up! When I was in school, everyone spoke English and the only one’s on Free or Reduced lunch was the very poor in our community; families that were struggling to make it, not struggling because they are sending the majority of their income to their homeland. I am not sure what the solution is for school funding-perhaps run it as you would run your home. When you do not have enough, you CANNOT spend it *period!!

      1. Get educated immigrants pay taxes, even the illegal ones. And they don’t get a tax refund. Where does that $ go?

        1. As usual, a typical liberal response telling someone they’re uneducated or behind the times to dismiss the many logical reasons for not having illegal aliens in our country. Or maybe you’re an illegal alien CYA, please let us know.

      2. Lower income families statistically have larger families, and smaller, less expensive homes. So they do spend less in property taxes but cost more in the schools. Illegal immigrants who live anywhere in the city limits do pay property taxes, either through rent that is then paid by the property owner to the city, or directly because they open the home and the land. Illegal immigrants do pay sales tax when they purchase taxable items at a store. They may not pay into social security, but if they have a fake SS number, then they do, but may not be able to cash out when they reach retirement age.

  7. And people should protest. Our appraisal went up $30,000. And we’ve done nothing to our property over the last year. And a friend of mine saw his value raised by over $100K. And he also has made no improvements. I think we’re getting ripped off. What’s even more troubling is I haven’t seen an increase in services over the last few years congruent with the increase in taxes. The section of road we live on still hasn’t been paved, the Sheriff’s deputies haven’t seen a significant raise, most county departments are operating on shoe string budgets. I don’t mind paying increased taxes on my property because I understand that to provide increased services you’ve got to pay for them. But show me some increased services. Show me what I’m getting for my money.
