PEARL HARBOR TRIBUTE PLANNED

Some dates on the calendar strike a certain and sometimes very sad cord in our minds.

There is September 11th, or November 22nd.  For an older generation, December 7th is one of those dates.

Clarence Gerke, of Memorial Oaks Chapel Funeral Home in Brenham, is working with downtown merchants, to organize a memorial for the veterans of World War Two, on Pearl Harbor Day, Saturday, December 7th

.

Gerke says the commemoration of the ‘Day that will live in infamy’ will be in conjunction with the Downtown Christmas Stroll that weekend.

At 4:30pm, that Saturday, the downtown merchants will have special events planned for visitors.  Gerke says they will have a short program at 108 Commerce Street, between Park and Douglas, to remember the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

He says all veterans are invited but they want to pay a special tribute to the veterans of the Second World War.  Gerke would like to see the families and friends of the veterans, as well, to make it a very special gathering.

Washington County Veterans Service Officer Kenneth Mueller will be the master of ceremonies.  The Downtown Merchant Association will serve chicken stew for all who come out, along with desserts, appetizers and music.\

Gerke says it is especially important to remember the World War Two veterans because they are ‘leaving us so quickly.’
