PETITION FOR NEW COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN BRAZOS CO. MOVES FORWARD

The Brazos County Talent Initiative Steering Committee will move forward with a petition to create a community college district in the county.

The Research Valley Partnership’s committee made the announcement on Thursday, saying the petition will be submitted to the Brazos County Commissioners Court during their meeting on Tuesday.

If the petition signatures are verified, the RVP would then have to submit those signatures to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for consideration. The THECB then would have to consider the proposal before approving the process moving forward. If that happens outside of a legislative session, then the proposal would go to the Legislative Budget Board for consideration.

RVP’s Brazos Talent Initiative Steering Committee began a push for the creation of a new community college in Brazos County last fall, citing a lack of workforce education offered by Blinn College in the county.

However, progress on their endeavor seemed to slow after Blinn and the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service announced they would join together in a workforce training partnership at the RELLIS campus.

Blinn and Texas A&M broke ground at the new facilities last month.

Blinn officials say the college has provided exceptional service to Brazos County for 46 years, and they plan to build upon that success with its expansion to the RELLIS Campus and the continued development of new academic transfer and career training programs.

  1. This has everything to do with RVP and it’s backers trying to find a way to make a quick buck for themselves and gain power in the community. They are no more concerned with a quality education (which Blinn has a long and rich history of providing) than a man in the moon.
