The City of Brenham has begun the search for a new Assistant City Manager.

Rex Phelps has informed the city he’s leaving for a similar post with Haltom City, a suburb of Ft. Worth, with about 45,000 people.

Phelps has been with the City of Brenham for six years – five as the police chief and the past year as the assistant city manager.

Brenham City Manager Terry Roberts says this new job is not something Phelps went out and solicited…

Phelps’ last day with the city will be Friday, April 8th.

Roberts says the city has advertised the post for several weeks and currently has about 50 resumes on hand.

Roberts says there’s no specific closing date for applications, but he hopes to begin interviews in the next two-to-three weeks.

  1. JD is exposing a very evident truth in the lack of ethnic variety for administrative employees in city hall. And as he stated, full time employees are cut to part-time to reduce benefits and free up money for hiring more managerial staff. If council truly represents the citizens, then council
mandates should be issued to hire a greater race variety of QUALIFIED persons in administrative jobs. And voters, if your council representative does not represent you with intergrity and fairness, then exercise the BEST weapon you have, support and vote for a worthy opponent. REAL change starts at the lowest levels, in your own back yard. Don’t just complain, ACT!

  2. With the city it does not depend on ur work ethic it all depends on who u know. A couple of years ago during budget cuts my wife who had nothing but excellent job skills and excellent training in her job, was cut to part time status as several other people were, when she asked about transferring to another position there were none available but yet there was a position at PD for the other person whose job was also cut took. So it’s all on who u know at city hall!! Just like there still is very few minorities working in City Hall because that has always been the norm to keep them out!!

  3. It appears that the common denominator here is a well deserved publc distrust of Brenham city hall. I have also heard of city personnel retiring and then being put back on the payroll as a “consultant” or some other postion. Maybe a city “official” will come forward and deny this.

  4. People are worried about the new positions, I would really like to know what it is that the people do in the current positions, that we need all these assistants.

    1. I would think that as any other smart business this day in time, they would use tools to log time for projects and task to show allocations available as well as task worked and completed on a day to day basis. I wonder who monitors this. That would show and justify any need for additional help and if the person is really allocating their time appropriately.

  5. Mr. Phelps will be greatly missed. He is a tireless and devoted public servant that brought competency and integrity to every endeavour. Best wishes to him in the future.
In regards to the continous expansion of well paid city positions, I can safely say concern for bureacratic bloat is shared by many citizens. Since 2012, the following highly paid positions were added to the city payroll: the city CFO was promoted to Assistant City Manager, a Director of Community Services was created and filled, Public Works Director was created, and lastly, a Manager of Developmental Services. I might be persuaded to accept these positions as necessary if we were a city the size of Bryan, but we are not. I can only assume that our City Manager now spends his time managing the growing group of directors and managers. I think many citizens would be pleased if council conducted a serious study on the true necessity of this position before replacing a vacancy of another “leadership role.”

  6. Many people are wondering why the City of Brenham “created” this job for Mr. Phrlp’s in the first place?

It’s kind of strange that Phelp’s left as Chief of Police and immediately the city made a new position for Phelp’s to work.

Who else here in Brenham thinks this is a little odd?

    1. Rex Phelps moved from Police Chief to Assistant City Manager last Spring, to replace retiring Assistant City Manager Kyle Danhaus.

      1. That is correct as I recall, Danhaus retired (one position) and phelps, Ogle, and Miller each were made an Assistant Manager. So. Doing the math, city still has twice as many Assistant City Managers, as we did before.

    2. Those who do not know, should not speak… Chief Phelps applied for a job to take the place of Kyle Dannhaus, the person that retired from that position last year… this was not a new position, and Chief Phelps never “left” the city.

      1. Right. So has Kyle actually left the city yet, or is he still ‘consulting’ on the library?
