PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION MEETING MONDAY

A new subdivision is asking for some minor changes from the Brenham Planning and Zoning Commission when it meets Monday.

Washington County Oak Alley LLC is asking for an amendment to its Oak Alley Subdivision located off Blue Bell Road near Mustang Road in Brenham. City staff members are recommending approval of the request.

Solution Builders LLC is requesting a replat of a portion of the Post Oak Grove Addition. A single family residence is planned for the lot at 1303 Simon Avenue. The replat is being recommended by city staff.

Presley Walcik, the owner of property at 107 West First Street in Brenham, is requesting a zoning change to allow a fitness facility on that property. Andy Adams of Washington County Athletics is leasing the building from Walcik. The zoning change is recommended by staff.

The City of Brenham is wanted to make a change to the type of sign required on property seeking zoning and other changes from the City. The Planning and Zoning Commission will review those changes at Monday’s meeting, along with some changes to the membership, appointment and terms of office for members of the Commission. That meeting is set for 5:15 Monday afternoon in the second floor council chambers at City Hall in Brenham.

  1. Is the city of Brenham allowing the no parking required policy for the new gym? I have not seen any recent reports. I need to know. If the parking is allowed on the street in front of our homes, the value of my home goes down with my quality of life. It will be time to move. What is the news?

    1. You need to call the City about any actions taken at any meetings or actually attend the meetings but the parking was never being considered. City Council passed an ordinance last year when they established that new district that does not require ANY business to have parking so it doesn’t matter if a gym, restaurant, dance hall or craft studio opens up. None of them will be required to have parking in the new district.

    2. Sounds to me like it should’ve already been reported and on the news, as to the outcome of this here meeting. I’m like a lot of people, if not most people, I didn’t here about this here meeting until a day or two before. I work all hours of the day and night. I just can’t stop everything, go to the meeting in the last minute, and lose my paycheck, or worst yet my job. Well, looks like to me the things that they want people to know are reported and them things they want secret are just swept under the rug.

  2. Here’s another question about “how it works in Brenham.” Since permitted improvements are being made on Simon Ave., is the lot owner having to give away a strip of property along the street in case the city decides to widen that street in the future? I hear that’s what happens now if you decide to make changes to your property and it’s located on a ‘major’ street; your permits or plats won’t be approved until you ‘voluntarily’ deed a portion of your property to the city for future use — and you don’t receive a dime for it, either. Hard to see how this is fair, since not all property owners may be extorted like this before the street does need to be widened, in which case those owners will be paid market value through the ordinary eminent domain process. I’m also curious what authority the city has to do this? If this was Erick’s idea, then no wonder he got another job — probably trying to get out of Dodge before the riots erupt!

Also, where is the map that the Planning Dept. has on file and publically available that designates streets as major, minor, destined to be widened or closed or whatever? I would sure like to see it so I don’t inadvertently buy property that I will then have to give to the govt. before I can do anything with it.

    1. Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power. Unfortunately, most in government fail this test.

  3. My home is arond the corner from the location of the fitness facility. They have already moved in. They are parking all over the street. I can hardly get to my house. Should I show up to the meeting!? I’m at work till 7pm. I can’t be there. Are they breaking the law, since they have been in the building for months? Is tgat the way it works, move in and then ask for permission? I’ll answer the question. yes ! That is the way it works in Brenham. And, parking is optional.

    1. WOW!! JUST WOW!! – I didn’t know of a new fitness facility in that area. It must be a hometown boy or as they say “where do you come from home” analogy… Oh well I hope they leave enough parking for the families that live in the area and have a good time working out. They might give discounts to offset the inconvenience they’ve caused.
Good luck to the new business.

      1. Actually, the saying is “who are you/were you from home?”. And the fitness center highlights one of the major problems with downtown…….Parking!! There is literally none! I think it’s great that someone is breathing life into that part of town. Isn’t that what progress is all about? I know when one certain person brought up the destruction of old buildings downtown, he was almost run out of town! Everyone wants the progress until it is in their back yard (or parking space). Perhaps the lot directly across from the property could be used for a parking lot; that’s if the city doesn’t already have it ear marked for something else! Let’s all work and live together. Change is acoming….do I like all of it? NO! But I have learned that there is really nothing I can do about it!
