PLEASANT HILL SCHOOL RECEIVES HISTORICAL MARKER

Pleasant Hill School, which dates back to the 1800s, received a historical marker during a special ceremony on Sunday.

“There were over 100 people in attendance” said Joyce Weiss, an organizer of the event. “We were so surprised so many people showed up, especially Senator Lois Kolkhorst.”

Weiss said Sen. Kolkhorst presented a special proclamation read on the Senate floor, noting the historical significance of the site.

Pleasant Hill is located in southernmost Washington County on Williams Creek four miles southeast of Brenham off State Highway 36. According to the Texas State Historical Association, the town was originally named Krug after Kenney Krug, who operated a store in the community.

The community changed its name to Pleasant Hill on March 29, 1878. By 1882 the town had a population of 350, two churches, and the school.

According to school records, Pleasant Hill School was located on two different sites during its time of operation.

The first was in Krug and was a one-room wood structure with a small front porch, typical of rural Texas schools of the time. The second site was purchased in 1918 and was located on the corner of Pleasant Hill Road and Dierking Road.

The school remained small until it was merged with Wonder Hill School and Salem School in 1954. Through the consolidation process, land ownership was passed to the Brenham Independent School District and then  to a private owner.
