PRAIRIE VIEW STREET NAMED FOR BLAND

Signs are up officially renaming the street leading to Prairie View A&M University after Sandra Bland, the university graduate who died in the Waller County jail last summer.

The Houston Chronicle reports University Drive signs were replaced with Sandra Bland Parkway signs in ceremonies Friday attended by about 100 activists, students and Bland's family.

The 28-year-old Bland, from near Chicago, was pulled over last July by a state trooper for making in improper lane change. When the traffic stop became contentious, she was arrested and jailed.

She died three days later. Her death has been ruled a suicide.

The trooper who arrested her has been fired and is charged with misdemeanor perjury related to her case.

  1. The downfall of our society is very clearly supported by PVA&M Univeristy. People shouldn’t support criminals. People shouldn’t support lifestyles that support illegal activities. All over the news we see people who have made the wrong choice be idolized by the news media and the trolls that support them.

Entitlement, ignorance, and lack of morals are the biggest issue with our country. God help us all!!

  2. She committed suicide and gets a street named after her. First responders and military members killed in the line of duty rarely get such an honor. Something seriously and disgusting wrong with this!!!

    1. What disgusting is that all because of a traffic violation u end up in a situation like this, all because of your race. If this would have been a different race she would have received a warring and a slap on her back, but klthat wasn’t good enuff for this cop,he had to make a scene because she was black and escalate the problem all because she was black no tell me who a criminal that violated the law! I love the street name let them so how wrong the law can be and every damage person need to be treated equally! !!

      1. Actually, she was going to be given a warning, and it escalated because she chose to smoke and refuse his orders.

Fault both sides – she didn’t follow officer’s order (arresting offense), he losing his temper.

I would say this if races reversed.

And BTW I think Prairie View A&M a good school and I’ve seen great people graduate from there. That said, I think this was a bad choice as the general public reads deeper into the Bland case.

  3. The Street was named University since it was the main pathway to the University; Sort of made sense. If you are going to rename the main pathway; it would be good to name it after a Hero. A War Hero that Fought for our Country and Graduated from Prairie View A&M. A Hero that fought for Our Country, A Hero that had Made A Choice To Give His Life For Our Freedom And For Every Soul In Our Country And Freedom In Our Country. A Military Hero that was under the influence of Patriotic Duty for His Country. That would be well Deserved for that Military Hero who Died, for Prairie View A&M, and for Our Country. I wish that Military Hero’s Name was on that Sign Instead; For the Sake of OUR COUNTRY.

    1. You are literally freaking out over a street sign. What is your problem? The military is important, and that’s why we have special days, ceremonies, monuments, and holidays to honor them. This is Sandra’s one little piece of honor, the woman who was a honor grad and was wrongly arrested. Grow up, get over it, and stop causing fuss over a street sign.

      1. Step outside of your Prairie View bias. Was she wrongly arrested, yes. However, Ms. Bland had a criminal history, owed several thousand in fines/fees, and had a large amount of marijuana in her system. The idea of having a road named after her is laughable, but she was an honor student after all!

        1. We really have gone off our rocker as a society. Ms. Bland was indeed wrongly arrested and the officer who did it is justifiably paying a very high price. I watched every minute of footage of this arrest from both the officers cam’s and the ones posted from bystanders. Ms. Bland’s behavior definitely played a role in the reaction she got from the officer, she was rude, belligerent, and aggressive. Her behavior was not that of a model citizen or an honor student. To have a street named after her is ridiculous! This should be an embarrassment to Prairie View!

      2. She was not wrongfully arrested. There are only two crimes in Texas that you cannot be arrested for (1) speeding and (2) open container of alcohol in a vehicle. She was also a fugitive from justice with several warrants and fines. Finally she had a large amount of marijuana in her system which means she was a drug abuser. A person with this background does not deserve any honor or to have a street named after her. What are we teaching our children when we honor a criminal.

      3. One little piece of honor my eye.. Your street sign is a joke!!! The whole story should not have even made the news. She broke the law, got caught, was pulled over, and didn’t do what was asked by the officer.. The rest is history.. Simply doing what was asked of her by at DPS trooper the entire issue would have never happened..

Cant wait to see how long the sign lasts….

      4. I had a lawman tell me something about twenty years ago. He said: Do the right thing at the right time for the right reasons. I saw that man today. I don’t know if he even knows I still think about that, but I do. Anyways, this is an unfortunate true story. It looks like In this incidence, the policeman was wrong, the driver was wrong, and now the college is wrong. Each of them can respond by saying No to each of these three questions. It’s a trail of Unfortunate Choices.

      5. The problem is that you don’t see a problem with her issues. She was not wrongly arrested. She resisted arrest and sat in jail where no one from her family would answer her calls. She had a criminal record. So, in self pitty, because she new her goose was cooked and would get fired from her job, etc…, she hung herself.

Let’s name everything after her for not being a stand up citizen.

        That is the problem.
