About 50 people attended a public forum Wednesday evening to gather input for the selection of a new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach for Brenham ISD. Glen West announced on Monday that he is leaving that position to become the Assistant Executive Director of the Texas High School Coaches Association.
Brenham School Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson led the forum and explained that Brenham is held in high regard among the coaching community, largely due to Glen West. He said that Athletic Directors seek out a town that has only one high school, so they can have the whole community behind them. He also said that this is the time of year that coaches look to move to a different district, so he expects to receive lots of applications for the position. Jackson said that he couldn’t hire an exact duplicate of Glen West, but he promised that the new Athletic Director would be great in their own way.
Some of the priorities offered by those attending the forum included: Starting athletic programs in Jr. High or earlier, equal support for female athletics, success with students in a district with similar demographics as ours, having great communication and organizational skills, and helping students reach the next level both athletically and academically.
Superintendent Jackson said that a selection committee would be formed soon and it would include Brenham ISD administrators and school officials, current coaches, and members of the community. Applications for the position are due by March 16th, and interviews will begin the following week.
