RANEY’S BILL MOVES OUT OF HIGHER EDUCATION COMMITTEE

The Texas Higher Education Committee Wednesday morning unanimously approved State Rep John Raney’s Blinn College funding bill, adding a  substitution which would give the Blinn Bryan campus more funding control.

Blinn Brenham officials believe that they Raney’s bill would be harmful to the Brenham campus. The substitution in the bill amending the bill’s wording so that the only impact would be on the Bryan and Brenham campuses, instead of campuses with fewer than 1000 students, which was the wording in the original bill, and would have applied to the Sealy and Schulenburg campuses.

A 2013-2014 financial report showed the Brenham campus had a loss of $606,722, while the Bryan campus posted revenue of $10.6 million. The Bryan campus would benefit from the bill, which would be based on contact hours, with the Bryan campus, with its 12,112 students, would get more funding than the Brenham campus, which has 2,230 students.

The Bill now goes to a vote in the full House.
