REP. SCHUBERT COMMENTS ON APPROVED HOUSE BUDGET

On Friday, State Representative Leighton Schubert (R-Caldwell) voted to approve the proposed House budget, also known as the committee substitute for Senate Bill 1.

The House approved its version of Senate Bill 1 with a final vote of 131-16.

Schubert says despite the revenue challenges facing the state and significant population and inflation growth, the budget approved by the Texas House is a balanced plan that reduces overall state spending by over $1 billion from the previous biennium.

“Crafting and passing the state budget is the most important thing that we do as legislators, and I am proud of what the House budget accomplishes,” said Representative Schubert. “This budget is fiscally conservative and keeps Texas living within its means while also addressing the critical needs of our growing state such as strengthening our public schools, protecting our retired teachers and ending the crisis at Child Protective Services.”

Schubert says the House budget makes significant investments in critical priorities for the state. The budget includes investing an additional $1.5 billion into public education while also reducing recapture, maintaining the House’s fiscal commitment to border security funding, dedicating new funding to community mental health services across the state, and investing an additional $450 million to address the crisis at Child Protective Services and improve foster care.

Now that Senate Bill 1 has been voted out by both the Texas House and Senate, it will head to a conference committee between the two chambers, where legislative members of both bodies will then finalize a state budget for each chamber’s approval.
