REPRESENTATIVE SCHUBERT BELIEVES LEGISLATION HARMS BLINN COLLEGE

Representative Leighton Schubert (R-Caldwell) in his first action as a State Representative is fighting legislation aimed at fundamentally harming the Blinn College system.

"Blinn College is vital to the interest of HD 13," said Representative Schubert. "It is fitting that in my first three weeks in office, I am standing to protect the future of Blinn College."

The legislation seeks to tie the funding of these campuses to the number of students on each campus.  Blinn College has three campuses located in House District 13: Brenham, Schulenburg and Sealy.

"The Blinn College System was created to provide high quality higher education to rural Texas.  Requiring funding be tied to contact hours defeats the purpose of the system and has a lasting detrimental impact to higher education in House District 13," said Representative Schubert.

Schubert has been working with stakeholders from the Blinn System, Senator Lois Kolkhorst, as well as other colleagues in the Texas House to find a solution that provides an opportunity for  the funding decisions to be made on the local level.

"I am fully committed to fighting for Blinn College.  Blinn has, for years, provided access to higher education in this area where there would otherwise be no provider," said Schubert.  "Having the state decide how Blinn should spend their funds is not the answer and I will continue to work to prevent that from happening."

  1. Thank you Representative Schubert. I fully agree with you. Blinn College in Brenham has been a substantial facility to young men and women near and far. I think the state’s involvement as projected would be detrimental to the education of all students and faculty.
