RICHARD PROVIDES RELIEF IN CUBS’ 3-2 WIN

Rayne Richard kept the Rudder Rangers bats at bay as the Brenham Cubs held on for a 3-2 district win, Monday night in Bryan.

Richard (1-1) came on in relief in the fourth inning, with the Cubs trailing 2-1.  The 6’4” junior right hander shut out the Rangers the rest of the way, yielding just one hit and striking out five.

The Cubs (10-6/5-0) took the lead in the top of the third inning when Ryan Newman’s two-out single scored Jacob Stegent.

The Rangers countered in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on a double by Darrien Williams off Cubs’ starter Dakota Brewton.

Caleb Hill gave the Cubs the lead for good, with a two-run single in the top fo the fifth inning.  Rudder pitcher Brady Batten had walked Stegent and Teddy Hoffman before Hill’s two-out hit.

Richard made the one-run lead hold up as he retired nine of the last 11 batters he faced.

Things did get interesting in the bottom of the seventh, as a pair of walks put the tying run on second and winning run on first, but a ground ball to Hill closed out the Cubs’ win.

The Cubs will host Magnolia tonight at Firemen’s Park at 7:00.

In other 18/4A games last night: Magnolia 4  Waller 1; Magnolia West 4  Huntsville 2; Montgomery 18  Willis 5.
