SALARY APPEAL MAKES ITS WAY TO COMMISSIONERS COURT

Sheriff Otto Hanak

A salary appeal from the Sheriff’s Office made its way to the County Commissioners this morning (Tuesday).  The dispute had to do with Deputy Yolanda Marshall, who became a patrol deputy in 2016, but failed to receive her 3 percent increase in hourly pay after serving in that position for 90 days.  As a result, she is being paid 51 cents per hour less than those deputies who have received the 3 percent increase.  Sheriff Otto Hanak told the commissioners that he has made multiple requests to have Marshall’s pay adjusted, only to be denied each time.  Hanak said he was told the requests were outside county policy because the 90 days had already passed.  Most of the discussion centered around who had the responsibility to make the pay increase, the Sheriff or the county’s HR department. Hanak argued that he has too high of a turnover rate in his office to keep track of each employee's pay, and that the HR department should do it.  Commissioner Kirk Hanath agreed that Deputy Marshall should receive the 3 percent increase, but said it was the Sheriff’s responsibility to notify HR that the increase was due:

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the 3 percent pay increase to Deputy Marshall.

  1. TAKEN FROM THE TEXT: Sheriff Otto Hanak told the commissioners that he has made multiple requests to have Marshall’s pay adjusted, only to be denied each time.
How is that incompetent on the Sheriff’s part? Who was the one denying the the request?
TAKEN FROM TEXT: Commissioner Kirk Hanath agreed that Deputy Marshall should receive the 3 percent increase, but said it was the Sheriff’s responsibility to notify HR that the increase was due: LOOKS TO ME LIKE HE DID NOTIFY SOMEONE AND WAS DENIED.
Either way she needs to get ALL her money reimbursed!

  2. Jus goes to show how stingey the Commissioners are. This deputy can’t get the money she’s owed and they want to fight over it. That sends a great message to your employees, in this case the ones who put their lives on the line for you, and really builds morale. And they wonder why the turnover rate is so higher? They could make more working at Buc-ee’s.

  3. What a crock, are we really so incompetent that someone can’t complete a form and send it in. Unbelievable that this had to make it to the commissioners court to handle. When a mistake is made regardless of who made the mistake, it must be fixed and it should be retroactive back to the date it first applied. I have been in HR for years and would never allow this to go unresolved. For the sheriff and HR to waste time on something like this when it could quickly be resolved is almost unforgivable, while they argue the employee suffers. Have we not had enough of the small minded pencil pushers making government hard to deal with. Enough is enough!

  4. I am glad we have the voice of Mr Hanath…. Maybe Breiden should learn from him….

  5. Seriously?? Someone dropped the ball on this one!! A procedure needs to be put in place to correct this. Glad to see that she was finally granted the 3 percent-question is…..is it retroactive?
