SALT GRASS TRAIL TO BEGIN RIDE FROM CAT SPRING

After being away from Brenham for years, the Salt Grass Trail Ride will leave from Cat Spring, and end in a parade through downtown Houston on Saturday, February 28th.

The Salt Grass Trail ride was founded more than 60 years ago by former Brenham Mayor Reese Lockett, Pat Flaherty, E.H. Marks, and John Warnasch, when it would ride from Brenham to Houston in 1952  for the, what was called then, the Houston Fat Stock Show and Rodeo.

This year’s parade expects some 25 wagons and 1500 riders to endure the seven day trip, with the first day taking the trail ride to the Austin County Fairgrounds in Bellville.

Conni Meyer, Director of Public Relations and Special Events, gives some details of what will occur on the ride after leaving Cat Spring.

On Sunday, the Salt Grass Trail Ride will observe “Tough Guys Wear Pink” to promote Breast Cancer Awareness as they ride into Bellville.  They will be greeted by the HLSR Committee as they go down the trail.  Pink is not mandatory but they hope for 100% participation.

On Monday, riders will be wearing yellow in memory of young Dayton Helms, who died on leukemia, and who was a SGTF participant, riding in Wagon One, the original of former Brenham Reese Lockett, one of the founders of the Salt Grass Trail Ride.

On February 27th, riders will observe “Red Friday” to show support for military men and women.
