BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College women’s basketball may have started its holiday break a little early as the Buccaneers were handed a 78-61 defeat at the hands of San Jacinto College-North Wednesday night inside the P.E. Building.

Turnovers and too many defensive lapses caused the Blinn loss as the Buccaneers now fall to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in Region XIV play.

“We just played really bad,” said Blinn coach Jeff Jenkins. “I was telling my assistant during the game that I don’t remember us playing this bad for the last seven or eight years.”

Ekiya Gray did have moments of solid offense for Blinn and finished with 18 points and Ebony Parker chipped in 16. Penina Faumui, Ashley Ford and Denisha Ford each had six points. San Jacinto had a balanced scoring attack but was led by Kaelynn Wilson with 20 points.

San Jacinto’s defensive pressure and turnovers doomed Blinn in the opening minutes as San Jacinto led 11-2 halfway through opening quarter. Gray got the offense going a little with six points in the quarter but San Jacinto held a 19-12 lead after one.

The second quarter was the best one for Blinn as Parker was able to hit a few shots from downtown and lead with eight points in the quarter as the Buccaneers outscored San Jacinto 16-13 and only trailed 32-28 at the half.

The second half did not start the way Blinn would have liked as San Jacinto to an 11-3 run for a 43-31 lead. San Jacinto maintained that lead in the third to lead 53-41 heading into the fourth.

Gray tried to get the Blinn offense going in the fourth with six points but San Jacinto was able to maintain control of the game to hand the Buccaneers their third conference loss.

Blinn will next play on Dec. 30 with a road trip to face McLennan Community College at 2 p.m.
