Second-chance points hurt Buccaneers in loss to Tyler, 73-65
Offensive rebounding of Tyler enough to grab road win
BRENHAM, Texas – Giving up offensive rebounds and second-chance points were a main reason that Blinn College women’s basketball fell 73-65 to Tyler Junior College Jan. 10 in Brenham.
For the majority of the game, the Buccaneers played good enough defense to defend the first shot of each possession for Tyler but the visiting Apaches hustled to the offensive boards to hand Blinn its first loss at home to move its conference record to 4-3 and 11-6 overall.
Katelynn Johnson led the Buccaneers in the loss with 15 points but she had a hard time getting open as Tyler paid her a lot of attention and she also had foul trouble in the first half. Shakera Barnes and Nancy Warioba each had nine points in the loss.
The game started fairly even in the first half as Blinn recovered from being down 6-0 to take a 19-16 lead after Johnson scored four points in a row at the 9:44 mark.
From there Tyler started to grab the momentum with a 12-1 run that gave the Apaches a 28-20 lead. Tyler extended the lead before the end of the half as they grabbed a 39-28 advantage at the break. Johnson scored seven in the first half and Penina Faumui scored six points by mostly hitting the offensive rebounds as well.
Blinn came out with solid energy in the second half but Tyler nearly matched the Buccaneers each time down the court while maintaining a double-digit lead.
In its last attempt at a comeback, Blinn scored nine consecutive points to cut a 14-point Tyler lead down to 68-63 with 3:12 left. Barnes hit two big shots during the run and scored seven points in the second half but that would be as close as the Buccaneers would get as Tyler was able to maintain control of the lead.
Johnson did score eight points in the second half and Courtney Dawson added seven points in the final 20 minutes.
Blinn will next travel to face Panola College on Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m. to try and get back to its winning ways.
