SECOND READING ON CITY TAX RATE, THURSDAY

The Brenham City Council will host its second public hearing on the proposed tax rate, Thursday afternoon at City Hall.

The proposed rate is 51.7-cents per $100 valuation, a one-cent increase over the current tax rate.  Combined with a 6-percent increase in property values—and the average tax-payer will see a 7-percent increase in the property tax.

Thirty-two cents of the tax will go for operations and maintenance and 19.7 cents for debt service.

No one commented on the proposed rate at the first public hearing, back on August 17th.

The council is expected to approve the tax rate on first reading, Monday morning, September 18th and again on second reading September 21st.

Also on Thursday’s agenda, will be formal acceptance of two grants: one for $19,000 for a Selective Traffic Enforcement Progrm from the Texas Department of Transportation and a $30,000 grant from TxDOT for airport maintenance.

The council will also discuss a prospective unnamed business relocation to the city and possible financial and “other” incentives.

The council will meet at 1 p.m. in City Hall, 200 W. Vulcan.
