SHERIFFS IN BRAZOS, GRIMES COUNTIES DECLINE I.C.E. PARTICIPATION

Sheriff Chris Kirk

Two Brazos Valley sheriffs have decided not to participate in a program with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that would have given deputies the authority to act as federal immigration agents. Their reasons are due to costs, not federal immigration policy.

The Brazos and Grimes County Sheriff's offices have opted out of a program called 287(g) that allows trained deputies to investigate undocumented immigrants in county jails. ICE currently handles those investigations.

Sheriff Don Sowell

Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk says booking officers already watch for signals that someone might be in the U.S. illegally, like lack of identification. From there, they send the inmate's information to ICE.

Kirk says that out of the 630 inmates in the county jail, 30 of them are being investigated by ICE.

In Grimes County, Sheriff Don Sowell says communication between federal agents and the sheriff's office is fluid.

Both plan to let ICE handle the investigations while they handle the day-to-day crime in local communities.

  1. Sounds to me like they have a valid reason for not pariciiating in the 287g program. Unlike the sheriff in Travis County these two are cooperating with ICE, just not enough manpower to do ICE’s job.

  2. What about the costs of housing them? The taxpayers foot the bill until ICE shows up. In Washington county, that is $55 per day! We are fools to comply in any fashion with state or federal UNFUNDED orders. The feds can not cut off vital federal funding to states, it is against the law, ( until trump installs his dictatorship thru a constitutional convention). With the help of states like Texas. Jails are for violent offenders, the others, no. Afterall, the biggest thieves in history never got a day in jail, Wall street!

    1. Yet your OK with paying $8500+ per year for a single illegal alien to go to public school along with their 10 illegal siblings as well as parents that contribute nothing to the tax base. They’ve all got to get back to central and south America now. We can’t afford to be a food and handouts basket for the world anymore. If you have a social program now, its just going to be abused and used up. No point in having them anymore until we get our old culture back.

President Trump is doing a fantastic job, and more power to him and Texas finally has a friend in the NCR.

      1. Our ‘old culture’ back? County poorhouses and no technology or electronic databases to detect and track whether a person is ‘illegal’ or not? I’m not sure what you mean.

        1. Old culture does not mean decrepit houses and slums. If you were actually in touch with the community of today, then you would understand our community of yesterday. Our Texas heritage of yesterday had morals and principals and character. People did not use vulgar language in public, stab you in the back, they got married instead of just shackling up with someone, and looked out for others and not just their self, and went to church s few times a month. Bottom Line, I’ll take the old culture over technology any day. Where a hand shake still means more than a text.

    2. Illegal aliens broke our laws by crossing our border illegally. They are criminals. Jails are for criminals. We the taxpayers are dishing out money hand over fist to pay for them. The welfare, housing, education and more. Yes $55 a day is steep but is it more than what we are paying with our federal tax dollars? My bet is that it isn’t. But if we can deport them, especially the ones who broke even more laws after they crossed the border illegally, we can reduce our overall spending. Sacrifices have to be made to clean up Obama’s mess and joke of an administration. I am proud of Donald Trump following through with his campaign promises and also for putting America first. We as American citizens come first and have the right to deport law breakers. God bless Texas, America, and Donald Trump.

  3. Just so they do notify ice of all suspected illegals, The dirty secret is they might lose some revenue if they deport too many illegals, the revolving door at least makes revenue for budgets. Been there done that.
