SIX-RUN SIXTH SINKS PANTHERS IN GAME-ONE

Starting pitcher Cash Kunkel

One disastrous inning was all it took for the Burton Panthers to fall in the opener of their Arear Playoff series with Flatonia.

The Bulldogs trailed 4-0 in the sixth inning when they erupted for six runs without a hit, on their way to a 7-4 series opening win.

The Panthers had built-up a 4-0 lead through five innings.

Starting pitcher Cash Kunkel had thrown five shutout innings, limiting the defending state champs to four singles.

But in the sixth Kunkel could not find the plate, walking three straight Flatonia batters to load the bases.  Reliever Cash Callahan then issued a one-out bases-loaded walk.  A two-run error cut the lead to 4-3.

With two outs, and the Panthers clinging to a one-run lead, a hit batsman and another walk tied the game.  Flatonia then took their first lead of the game on a two-run throwing error.

When the dust had settled, the Bulldogs had scored six runs without a hit, on six walks, a hit batsman and two errors.

Flatonia added an insurance run in the seventh, when Kyle Etzler led off with a double and scored on a throwing error.

Kaden Mickulik went six innings to pick up the win, striking out 10, while yielding seven hits.  Kannin Mickulik pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the save.

Demonderick Winters was 2-3 with 2 doubles.

Burton took and early 1-0 lead when Demonderick Winters drove in Aaron Kohring with a two-out double in the first inning.

The Panthers added two more runs in the third, when Callahan tripled and scored on a wild pitch.  Cade Weiss then singled to drive in Winters who had doubled.

Callahan scored again in the fifth after a double, a single by Bailey Deramus and a sacrifice fly by Kohring.

Cash Callahan was 2-4 with a double and a triple.

Easton Migl led the Bulldogs’ offense with two hits and two intentional walks.

The Panthers now face a must-win situation, Friday night when they take the field for game-two at 7:00 back at the LaGrange Fairgrounds.

If the Panthers win, it would force a third-and-deciding game, Saturday night at 7:30 at LaGrange High School.
