SOMERVILLE FOOTBALL COACH RESIGNS AFTER ONE GAME

In a shocking move this (Tuesday) morning, Somerville head football coach and athletic director Rex Sharp announced his resignation, just one game into his first season.

Somerville went 0-10 last season and dropped its opener 48-7 to Iola on Friday, extending the program's losing streak to 30 games.

Sharp was promoted from assistant in July to replace James Richardson, who quit coaching after one season to accept another position in the school district.

Superintendent Charles Camarillo told the Bryan/College Station Eagle that Somerville officials have contacted a possible replacement outside the district who could join the program as soon as Wednesday if he is released from his contract at the school where he currently serves as an assistant coach.

Camarillo declined to give the candidate's name, but said he is a former head coach with ties to Somerville High School's principal.

Sharp did not go into details as to the reason for his resignation, only to say he will consider entering private business and hopes to make contacts in the area.
