SOMERVILLE GRAD RECEIVES JOURNALISM AWARD

  

A former Somerville graduate has received one of the most prestigious journalism awards in broadcasting.

Sylvia Villarreal, along with her news team from KXXV-TV in Waco, were named Region 6 Edward R. Murrow Award recipients.  The team received the award on April 25 for their four-part documentary, “Remembering Jarrell: 20 Years Later”, which recalled the destruction of the F-5 tornado in Jarrell in 1997.

The Edward R. Murrow Award honors outstanding achievement in electronic journalism.  From over 4,400 entries, 785 Murrow Awards in 16 categories were given this year, and Villarreal’s news team won in the Small Market Television division for Oklahoma and Texas.
