SOMERVILLE ISD COACH ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT OF A CHILD, ONLINE SOLICITATION

A coach at Somerville ISD has been arrested for online solicitation of a minor and sexual assault of a child.

Mike Vela (Washington County Jail)

28-year-old Mike Christopher Vela was arrested by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday at Somerville High School.

The charges resulted from an extensive investigation in which a 15-year-old male made allegations of inappropriate and unlawful conduct with Vela in Washington County.

According to the school’s website, Vela is the head basketball coach at Somerville High School and teaches 7th grade Texas History and 10th grade World History. Vela’s online profile also says he previously coached in Brenham, Poth, and Cameron Yoe.

He is currently being held at the Washington County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

Somerville ISD released a statement Tuesday saying:

“This afternoon, February 21, 2017, one of our educators, Mike Vela, was arrested at the Somerville High School by Washington County Sheriff’s Office. The charges as communicated by law enforcement are inappropriate relationship with a minor. Somerville ISD is cooperating fully with the law enforcement and will release information as it is released to us. The safety and security of our students is our number one priority. We will continue to investigate this matter on our end and ask that you share with law enforcement and/or with Mr. Camarillo any suspicions/incidents that you are aware of related to this matter.”

  1. Wow that’s just awful. He is my son’s teacher and he said he saw them arrest him. He said he was funny.. A shame we send.our kids to be educated and have to worry about them being molested.

    1. You don’t have to send them to school to get molested…. That can happen anywhere. He has not been convicted yet. What about those people out in the community that are doing the same thing, or even family members. Look at some statistics and see that most offenses come from family. However I suggest that you speak and educate your child well. This can happen anywhere at anytime but because of his career it looks worse. If he was a scum on the street no one would care but some judge him as if the crime would make a difference if he had another job. I don’t agree with what is alleged but I do know that this is a crime that anyone can be committing and because he is a teacher makes no difference. I have 2 children in the school and I don’t worry about anything because we communicate and are open plus I pray over my children. Stop judging go to board meetings and PTO meetings and get involved with the teachers!

    2. Oh wow and to think that he was around my 10th grader at school , I constantly worry about my 17 year old and coach her to stay off of the media Web sights because of this reason. Really I am wondering what kind of back ground checks are done on any texas school teachers. I do believe that maybe the Texas Education Association in Austin Texas should be able to require all Teachers that recives a daplom to TEACH SCHOOL in Texas recive various types of CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS to be able to teach our children . All of our children should be able to attend school with out worrying about their safety at school.
