SOMERVILLE ISD ENROLLMENT GROWING

Officials with the Somerville Independent School District say they are experiencing an unusually large increase in enrollment during the current school year.

Superintendent Charles Camarillo says the district has seen an increase of 50 students since the end of school last May.  The district has risen from 453 students at the end of 2016-17, to 503 students currently.

Out of those 50 new students, 31 attend Somerville Elementary School and 19 attend Somerville High School.  This has increased the total number of students at the two schools by 10%.

Camarillo says the increases have been evenly distributed among the different grades.

Officials attribute the bump in enrollment to growth within the city of Somerville as well as growth in surrounding areas.

Somerville ISD officials say they expects even larger numbers when the new state of the art elementary school opens next year.

District officials say if the enrollment numbers continue to grow, they could receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in state funding.
