STAR OF THE REPUBLIC MUSEUM TO FEATURE NEW EXHIBIT
The Star of the Republic Museum administered by Blinn College has announced the opening of a new exhibit that examines the historical and genealogical roots of artifacts donated to the Museum over the past decades.
The 30-piece exhibit, “Heirloom Genealogy: Tracing your Family Treasures,” opens Saturday, March 4, and will remain open through February 15, 2018.
The exhibit examines historical artifacts to reveal their origination and how they arrived in Texas. Items in the exhibit – which include a child’s buckskin suit dating back to the early 19th century, German clog-making tools, and a square grand piano – have been donated to the museum by descendants of the artifacts’ original owners.
“Although Star of the Republic Museum focuses on collecting and preserving items from the Texas Republic era from 1836-1846, there are artifacts from other time periods in our possession,” said Shawn Carlson, Curator of Collections and Exhibits. “This exhibit gives the museum an opportunity to showcase those items.”

The unveiling of the exhibit coincides with the annual Texas Independence Day Celebration hosted by Blinn College, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, and Washington on the Brazos State Park Association held March 4-5 at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site.
Star of the Republic Museum was created by the Texas Legislature and is administered by Blinn College as a cultural and educational institution. Its purpose is to collect and preserve the material culture of the Texas Republic from 1836-1846 and to interpret the history, cultures, diversity and values of early Texans. Operating hours are from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.
