STAR OF THE REPUBLIC MUSEUM TO HOST GENEALOGY WORKSHOP

Texans interested in learning more about Texas history and their personal lineage are invited to attend a genealogy workshop at Star of the Republic Museum, located at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site.

The workshop will be Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the park auditorium, located between the museum and the visitor’s center.

Heather Kramer, professional librarian and genealogist, will lead the workshop. Kramer has eight years’ experience in libraries, archives and museums and has worked for Montgomery County Memorial Library System, Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research in Houston and Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C.

The morning session will focus on the basics of genealogy methods and resources, with an emphasis on the use of the U.S. Census. After lunch, the workshop will delve into search strategies and identification of collections on ancestry.com. The session will close with a look at the top 10 genealogical websites for research.

“We’re offering this so people can complete their lineages,” said Shawn Carlson, curator of exhibits. “Besides learning more about their own personal history, attendees will have a chance to benefit from the sites we have here.”

The workshop is $40 and includes a boxed lunch. To register or learn more about the workshop, email star@blinn.edu or call 936-878-2461, ext. 234. Pre-registration is required and seating is limited. The deadline to register is Oct. 3.
