Strong offensive output helps No. 11 Buccaneers beat No. 1 Temple and Meridian

Blinn scored a combined 16 runs to earn a pair of victories

PASADENA, Texas – No. 11 Blinn College softball had its offense working today in combining to score 16 runs to earn victories over No. 1 Temple College 7-5 and a 9-0 win over Meridian Community College at the San Jacinto College Softball Tournament Friday afternoon in Pasadena.

The Buccaneers have won five of their last six games as their overall record improved to 7-6 with the pair of victories today.

Blinn 7 – Temple 5

Blinn used the long ball to beat Temple as Jordin Wilkins hit two home runs and Meghann Wrinkle added a home run of her own. Lauren Silver, Katie Andrie and Courtney White each had two hits in the win.

Faith Genoway started in the circle for the Buccaneers and pitched four innings and allowed four runs while striking out four to get the victory. Bobbi Berkey came on in the fifth inning and pitched the final three innings to pick up the save while not allowing an earned run.

Wrinkle got Blinn on the board right away with a solo home run in the first for a 1-0 lead. That lead disappeared quickly as Temple scored two in the first and third to take a 4-1 advantage.

The Buccaneers started to chip away at the Temple lead in the fourth when Andrie doubled to begin the inning and later scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Cheyenne Trader to get within 4-2. Wilkins helped to give Blinn back the lead with a three-run home run to score Wrinkle and Andrie for a 5-4 lead.

Silver was able to extend the Blinn lead with a double to left to score Wrinkle for a 6-4 lead in the sixth inning. Temple countered with a single run in the bottom half but the Buccaneers were able to grab an insurance run in the seventh. Wilkins again connected on a home run, this time a solo home run to give the Buccaneers a 7-5 cushion. That lead would hold up as Berkey pitched a perfect seventh to earn the save.

Blinn 9 – Meridian 0

Blinn saw no need to play all seven innings against Meridian as the Buccaneers ended the game with the mercy rule after a big fifth inning. Nicole Garcia, Silver and Katy Sawyer each had two hits in the win while Garcia also knocked in a pair. Sam Junkin pitched all five innings in the win and only allowed five hits and struck out five as well.

Blinn got started fast in the first inning when Garcia started the game with a double and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Andrie. Wilkins knocked in another run with a sacrifice fly of her own for a 2-0 lead.

Silver was able to help Blinn add to its lead when she reached on a two-out single and later scored on a double hit by Andrie to center for a 3-0 lead. Sawyer helped to add another run in the fourth with a one-out single and then later scored on a ground out by Seeley Orsak for a 4-0 cushion.

Blinn decided not to wait until the seventh inning and instead closed out the game in the fifth with a big inning. Andrie started the inning when she reached on an error and Courtney White walked two batters later.

Orsak drove in two runs with a double to right for a 6-0 lead. Garcia followed with a two-run single to right for an 8-0 lead. Wrinkle capped the scoring with a double to center to plate Garcia for the ninth run. Junkin held Meridian scoreless to end the game early in five.

Blinn will continue in the San Jacinto College Softball Tournament with the first of three game on Saturday, Feb. 13 against Wallace State Community College-Hanceville at 10 a.m.
