BRENHAM, Texas – A balanced scoring attack in the second half helped the Blinn College women’s basketball team break the game open and earn a 74-64 victory over Paris Junior College Jan. 28 in Brenham.

Nine players scored for the Buccaneers in the second half alone, which helped the team improve its conference record to 8-4 and 15-7 overall.

“Honestly, I was pleased with the effort all night,” said Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins. “I thought Paris shot the ball well but we didn’t give up that many open shots tonight.”

Nancy Warioba led the way for Blinn with 14 points while Courtney Dawson had 12 and Alexus Freeman finished with 11 points. Ashley Cherry had nine points while Brianna Luton and Katelynn Johnson each finished with eight points in the win. Dawson did a good job of creating turnovers in the second half

“I like to try to time the pass and go for the steal,” Dawson said. “It’s a good win but we are just trying to find a way to get more consistent.”

Each team built a run in the first half to grab a piece of the lead. After a sluggish start and trailing 10-4, Blinn went on an 11-0 run sparked by a 3-pointer by Cherry that gave the Buccaneers a 15-10 lead.

Blinn had a hard time pulling away from Paris in the first half as the visiting team battled back to tie the game up at 28-28 at the half. Warioba did have eight points in the first half as she was a consistent scorer in the post.

Blinn will again be at home Jan. 31 when it hosts Angelina College at 4 p.m. in the P.E. Building.
