TAXPAYERS HAVE EXTRA TIME TO FILE THIS YEAR

If you’re on of the 40 million Americans who hasn't filed your taxes this year, you have a reason to celebrate today- you have an extra three days to submit your annual return.

While tax day in the United States by law falls on April 15th, this year the deadline is Tuesday, April 18th.

The extended tax deadline is because April 15th is a Saturday and Monday is a holiday in Washington D.C.

The nation’s capital observes Emancipation Day- a holiday which commemorates the day when Abraham Lincoln signed legislation freeing slaves in the District of Columbia.

The IRS urged taxpayers to stay calm this week as the deadline approaches.

“With the tax deadline approaching, taxpayers shouldn’t panic. The IRS has many options available to help people as they finalize their tax returns or if they need to get extra time to file,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.

Through April 7, the IRS has processed more than 100.9 million tax returns and issued more than 80.2 million refunds totaling $228.9 billion. The average refund is $2,851.
