TEXAS A & M EXPANDING ITS REC CENTER

  

Students at the College Station campus of Texas A&M will soon have more room to exercise and take part in all manner of activities after the Texas A&M Sports administrators and architects from Marmon Mok announced Tuesday the status of a $54 million project to expand the student activity and recreation center.

Dennis Corrington, the executive director of the department of recreational sports  says this will have a major impact on the campus right away. 

When the approximately, 300,0000 square foot recreation center  opened there were 1.2 million check ins during the first year.  Corrington said the center was full the day it opened.

The remodeling plans includes 56,000 square feet of renovated space and 113,000 square feet of new construction.  Additions include a personal training suite with an indoor turf area, a gymnasium that can hold two basketball courts, new activity rooms for group exercises, a second entrance on the south side of the building and an eight lane indoor lap pool.  Administrators decided to add an outdoor plaza and lounge area on top of the expanded the rather than leave the space just a roof.  These renovations will expand the rec center size by 25 percent.
