TEXAS BALLOON PILOT HAD COMPLAINTS AGAINST COMPANY

The pilot of the hot air balloon that crashed and killed sixteen people in Lockhart on Saturday morning had previous complaints about his balloon touring company.

The Better Business Bureau had warned consumers against doing business with 49-year-old Alfred “Skip” Nichols.  He had previously been arrested in Missouri in 2000 for driving while intoxicated.

Federal investigators said that the balloon hit high-tension power lines before crashing into a pasture. There were reports of foggy weather around the area on Saturday morning. Ground crew members told investigators that they launched about 20 minutes after the expected takeoff time of 6:45 a.m. The balloon then traveled 8 miles from takeoff to crash.
