TEXAS EXPANDS ZIKA TESTING

Texas health authorities have confirmed 18 cases statewide of the Zika virus.

State officials say they are taking steps to combat the virus, including creating capacity in their state lab to test 135 human blood samples a week and urging mosquito control measures.

Several public health labs around the state have added testing capacity to help with surging demand.

All but one of the state’s 18 confirmed cases occurred in people who traveled to Latin America and the Caribbean where Zika is spreading, primarily from mosquito bites.

No Zika-infected mosquitoes have been found in Texas or other U.S. states, but, as the weather warms, officials expect to see U.S.-acquired cases.
