TEXAS INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS KICK OFF IN WASHINGTON COUNTY

Washington County is kicking off the Texas Independence celebrations today (Friday) with a variety of activities.

The Sam Houston Day Proclamation Ceremony will officially begin the weekend celebrations at 4:00 pm in Independence, the hometown of Sam Houston and his family from 1853 to 1858.

The public is invited, free of charge, to the ceremony that will take place at the Texas Baptist Historical Museum where Houston regularly attended church and received his baptism.

The “Eve of Texas Independence” will start at 6:00 pm at Alamo Alley in Historic Downtown Brenham. This unique event will emulate the many gatherings across Washington County in the days immediately before the 1836 Constitutional Convention.

While tickets are sold out to the “Eve of Texas Independence” event tonight, admission to the Texas-themed movie screening of “The Alamo” is still available. The film, starring Dennis Quaid and Billy Bob Thornton, will be shown at The Barnhill Center at Historic Simon Theatre. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with the movie starting at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12-years-old. Tickets can be bought at the door or online at downtownbrenham.com/eveoftexas.

On Saturday and Sunday, thousands of visitors will gather at Washington-on-the-Brazos state historic site for the two-day Texas Independence Day Celebrations.

The 181st birthday anniversary celebration features a lively play titled The Birth of a Republic, Texas A&M University Singing Cadets, cannon and musket firing lines, historical reenactments, food, old-time live music, traditional crafts, living history presentations, and an authentic 1836 Texas Army camp where visitors may wander freely.

The Texas Independence Day Celebration is free of charge to visitors including admission to the grounds, all WOBSHS attractions, on-site shuttles and parking. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

KWHI’s Craig Montana will be broadcasting live from the celebration on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
