TEXAS LAWMAKER PREPARE FOR SANDRA BLAND ACT

Texas lawmakers have laid the foundation for the Sandra Bland Act.

The House Committee on County Affairs released a series of recommendations this week aimed at preventing racial profiling by Texas law enforcement. Committee Chairman Rep. Garnet Coleman (D-Houston) says he will use the recommendations to file the “Sandra Bland Act”.

Coleman says the bill, which was inspired by the death of Sandra Bland, would prohibit consent searches of motorists and require de-escalation training for officers.

The Sandra Bland Act would also create a grant program that would provide funding to County jails to improve safety. Those safety measures include providing tele-mental health services, having onsite medical professionals, and installing automated electronic sensors to ensure accurate and timely cell checks are occurring.

“The Sandra Bland Act will aim to enhance our pre-trial criminal justice system and prevent tragedies like what happened to Sandra Bland” says Coleman.

“These policies are truly the effort of the work of many who have come to share their ideas with the County Affairs committee.”

  1. Sick of hearing about it. She should have done what she was told and kept her mouth shut. And yes this is a joke. A stupid one.

  2. I think this is a good thing. Brenham gone always be a racist town, what if this had been a white person nothing would be said PERIOD POINT BLANK

    1. The real TRUTH is ……..SHE made BAD decisions and now is being glorified for that. The street should be named after a REAL HERO.

    1. I totally agree with you. Why is Sandra Bland being turned into a martyr? A hero she is not.

  3. What does this have to racial profiling? Is it needed for everyone, or just minorities? The stated reason for this bill is based on a false narrative.

    1. Sandra Bland had a brain in her skull and she made her decisions. Granted the traffic stop could have been handled differently but I see no need to glorify her decision to commit suicide.
