TEXAS LEGISLATURE OKs ELIMINATING STRAIGHT-TICKET VOTING

The Texas Legislature has approved eliminating straight-ticket voting beginning in September 2020.

The House passed the bill on Saturday with Republican support over Democratic objections.

The measure will eventually prohibit Texans from choosing a party’s full slate of candidates with a single ballot marking. Texas is one of 10 states that still allows straight-ticket voting.

Supporters of the bill say ridding the state of straight-ticket voting forces voters to make more informed decisions in individual elections. Opponents say people can still vote for all of one party’s candidates, but that process will be more time-consuming and will add to lines at polling places.

The legislation now goes before Gov. Greg Abbott for consideration.

  1. Heaven forbid voters have to bubble in so many individual choices. It’s bad enough they should have to prove their eligibility.

    1. I agree. If you don’t want to take the time to vote for each position, stay home.
