TEXAS VOTERS NEED ID TO VOTE TUESDAY

Election Day is tomorrow(Tuesday).  This is the first statewide election with the Voter ID law in effect.

Slow early voting could mean a low voter turnout Tuesday for the State Constitutional Amendment election.

When early polls closed Friday night, just 731 ballots had been cast among Washington County’s 22,000 registered voters.

Nine proposed constitutional amendments are on the ballot.

There is only one local item that only affects the residents of one subdivision.  Residents of the Oak Hill Fresh Water District are voting on a bond issue.

The one amendment proposal that is getting the most state-wide attention is Proposition Six which would take $2-billion from the state’s Rainy Day Fund to create the State Water Implementation Fund.

Governor Rick Perry and District-13 State Representative Lois Kolkhorst of Brenham have been very vocal supporters of the issue.

This election is also the first under the new requirement that requires photo identification.

District Clerk Beth Rothermel says there have been no problems in implementing the new state policy.  She says anyone wanting to vote will be allowed to.  A voter can sign an affidavit that they are registered or cast a provisional ballot.  No one will be turned away from the polls.

The story is different in another part of the state. Jim Wright, the former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, was denied a state ID card right before Election Day.  Wright tells the Ft. Worth Star Telegram that he realized last week he did not have the proper identification.  He could not get one because his driver’s license and his university faculty identification does not meet the requirements.  The 90-year old former speaker says he worries about others who could be affected by what he called ‘unduly stringent requirements.’
