The man who was the architect of the first Brenham Cubs’ State Tournament baseball team has died.

Coach A.J. Luquette died at the age of 87.

Aurelian Joseph Luquette was born in Beaumont in 1926.  In 1963 he became the head coach of the Brenham Cubs baseball team and was also named the high school’s athletic director.

In 1966 he led the Cubs to the State Tournament for the first time in school history.

Luquette returned to Brenham in 2007 for a reunion of that 1966 team that is considered the beginning of the legacy that has led to 16 State Tournament appearances and seven State Championships; Both state records.

Luquette has donated his body to medical science and a memorial will be held at a later date.
